The spelling of our family name in old documents
It must be said—there are many ways to write our family name! Today, the most common spellings are Thifault, Thiffault, and Thiffeault. But in old documents, our surname was written according to the whim of whoever held the pen.
Although the spelling Tifault is not the most common form, it is the one found in the marriage record of our ancestors, Jacques Tifault and Marie Anne L’Escuyer, married in Batiscan in 1687. According to the Programme de Recherche en Démographie Historique (The Research Program in Historical Demography or PRDH), the spellings most frequently encountered in period documents are Tiffaut, Tifaut, and Thiffault.
